Higher Education Budget Rises 8.25% for 2027

Algeria has allocated a significant 843.81 billion DZD for the higher education and scientific research sector within the 2027 finance law. This represents an 8.25% increase in commitment authorizations compared to the previous year, underscoring the government's sustained investment in the nation's academic and scientific future. Kamal Badari, the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, presented these details to the Finance and Budget Committee of the National People's Assembly as part of ongoing deliberations on sectoral budgets for the upcoming year.

The budget formulation is guided by the directives of the President of the Republic and the core objectives outlined in the government's action plan. It emphasizes four primary axes: bolstering scientific research and valorizing its outcomes, enhancing student living conditions and elevating university life, strengthening university governance, and developing the entire higher education and scientific research system to align with national development requirements. These initiatives aim to foster academic and professional growth, implement effective pedagogical guidance, and complete reforms in medical sciences training while adapting the university training map to meet the country's evolving needs.

The sector has recently made strides in comprehensive digitization, which has encompassed approximately 1.84 million students and seen the university entry process digitized for the third consecutive year. Further strengthening the link between academia and the national economy, 79 percent of new training programs are now directed towards science, technology, and professions crucial for the future. Notable developments include the establishment of the National Higher School of Optics and Engineering in Setif, the introduction of new specializations in medicine and health sciences, and the launch of seven dual-degree training programs across five universities. Efforts also include attracting 334 international students from 39 different nationalities and continuing the 'Study in Algeria' program, alongside enhancing the participation of the Algerian scientific diaspora abroad in research and innovation.
