High-Level Conference on Peace and Security in Africa: The Ongoing Support for the A3+ Group is Essential to Achieve the Continent’s Aspirations

Oran, Algeria – December 2, 2024 – The Foreign Minister of Uganda, Mr. Odongo Jeje Abubakar, emphasized the importance of continued support for the A3+ group during the closing session of the 11th High-Level Conference on Peace and Security in Africa in Oran, Algeria. He highlighted the significant and tireless efforts made by the group to promote the aspirations of the continent and its people in areas of security, peace, and development.

In his speech, Mr. Abubakar pointed out that this ongoing support is essential not only to reinforce the continent’s aspirations for peace, security, and development, but also to empower Africa within the United Nations Security Council. He stressed the need to ensure the effectiveness of the A3+ group in advocating for African positions on the international stage. The A3+ group, he noted, plays a crucial role in defending African interests at the UN, and this support is fundamental to strengthening Africa’s voice globally.

He also referred to the significant work being done by the group in the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, emphasizing the need to continue the dialogue initiated by the conference, particularly through the Oran process, which aims to bring African countries closer together. “The more united we are, the stronger we become,” he stated.

Mr. Abubakar also underscored the importance of completing the strategic continental action plans, which will serve as a roadmap for combating terrorism and enhancing the efforts of member states in addressing emerging threats. He noted that addressing terrorism requires tackling its root causes, including ideological issues, human security, governance, and other related factors.

Furthermore, the Ugandan minister emphasized the need for social and economic programs to empower Africa’s people both economically and socially. He advocated for adding value to Africa’s natural resources, so that the continent is not merely exporting raw materials. He suggested that transforming just 5% of Africa’s natural resources before exporting them could create 5 million jobs annually.

Mr. Abubakar also praised Algeria’s continuous efforts to ensure the success of the Oran process, aiming to achieve peace, security, and economic development for the African peoples.
