Ali Haroun, Liberation War Veteran and Lawyer, Dies at 99

President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has paid tribute to the moudjahid (Liberation War veteran) Mohamed Ali Haroun, who died on Saturday, praising his commitment to the service of the Revolution and of Algeria.

In a message of condolences, the head of state said he learned of the death “with deep emotion and great sadness.” He described Haroun as a man of culture, a witness to the events he lived through and an author, as well as a distinguished lawyer and jurist.

Haroun, a former member of the High State Council, was 99. Born in 1927, he joined the National Liberation Front (FLN) when the war began in November 1954. He became one of the early leaders of its Federation of France, where he handled political and media work, and contributed to the diplomatic effort and the financing of the Revolution. As a lawyer, he defended Algerian detainees and activists before French courts.

After independence in 1962, he was elected to the first Constituent Assembly. He later served as minister and, in 1992, joined the High State Council, the collective body that led the country until 1994. He was its last surviving member.

Haroun also left a written account of his experience, including “La Septième Wilaya”, a book on the FLN in France during the war.
