Australian Envoy Huggins Meets Algeria’s Chaib on Terrorism

Sofiane Chaib, Algeria's Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, received Gemma Huggins, the Australian Ambassador and Special Envoy for Counter-Terrorism, during her working visit to Algeria from September 27 to 29. The visit by the Australian official aimed to strengthen dialogue and cooperation on critical counter-terrorism issues between the two nations.
The meeting provided a platform to review Algeria's extensive experience in combating terrorism and violent extremism. Discussions also encompassed an exchange of views on the evolving landscape of terrorist threats, with a particular focus on the African continent and the Sahel region. Both parties explored mechanisms to enhance cooperation and coordination, supporting international efforts at a multilateral level, notably within the framework of the United Nations.
During the meeting, Mr. Chaib outlined Algeria's comprehensive and integrated approach to counter-terrorism. This strategy combines effective security responses with addressing the underlying causes and conditions exploited by terrorist organizations for recruitment and expansion, achieved through strengthening state institutions, supporting development and reconciliation initiatives, and fostering robust regional and international cooperation.
Mr. Chaib also underscored President Abdelmadjid Tebboune's pivotal role as the African Union's champion in combating terrorism and violent extremism. He highlighted Algeria's dedicated efforts to promote African ownership and leadership in confronting this challenge, along with its active contributions to international counter-terrorism initiatives, including the Algerian Guiding Principles adopted by the UN Security Council in January 2025. These principles serve as a reference framework for international cooperation against terrorist financing and the exploitation of modern technologies for terrorist purposes, alongside Algeria's engagement in capacity building through the Global Counter-Terrorism Forum.
