Occupied Jerusalem Embassy: Algeria Urges UN Security Council Action

The Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a strong condemnation on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, following the Colombian government's decision to establish an embassy in occupied Jerusalem. Algeria characterized this step as an unacceptable and regrettable maneuver that constitutes a clear violation of international legality. Algiers stated that the move aims to alter the legal and historical status of the Holy City, contributing to a policy of imposing a fait accompli in the Palestinian territories.

Algerian diplomacy emphasized that the decision fundamentally contradicts the principles of international law and numerous United Nations resolutions concerning Jerusalem's specific status. The ministry expressed deep concern regarding the potential political and security ramifications on the ground, warning that such unilateral actions could severely impede the prospects of achieving a two-state solution. This solution is internationally recognized as the sole viable foundation for a definitive resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and the Colombian initiative is seen as undermining diplomatic efforts towards a just, comprehensive, and lasting peace in the Middle East.

In response to what it views as repeated infringements on the rights of the Palestinian people, Algeria renewed its appeal to multilateral bodies. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs specifically called upon the international community and the United Nations Security Council to fulfill their legal, moral, and historical responsibilities. Algiers urged immediate international action to halt policies that aim to impose illegitimate realities in the occupied Palestinian territories, underscoring that upholding international law remains indispensable for securing an equitable resolution to the Palestinian issue.
