ANP Deploys to Niger, Safeguarding Regional Interests

Algeria's National Popular Army (ANP) has initiated its first foreign military deployment since 1973, with an Algerian military convoy arriving in Arlit, a uranium mining town in northwestern Niger. This operation represents a significant development for Algeria's military doctrine, marking a strategic effort to secure national energy and economic interests and combat rising instability and terrorist threats in the Sahel region. The deployment is particularly aimed at establishing a protective presence around vital economic and energy infrastructure in an area facing increasing security challenges from groups linked to Al Qaeda and Daesh.

This historic deployment underscores Algeria's commitment to safeguarding its substantial economic and energy investments in Niger. These include operations by the state-run oil and gas firm Sonatrach, notably in the strategic Kafra oil block. Additionally, the mission supports the crucial Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline project, which involves Niger and Nigeria and is designed to transport African gas to European and international markets. Ensuring stability in Niger is considered a key regional security priority for Algeria, given their shared border and the imperative to protect these critical projects.

The decision for this deployment followed a thorough institutional process in Algeria. On October 25, the Algerian Parliament, comprising both the National People's Assembly and the Council of the Nation, approved the force projection after a detailed presentation by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Attaf. The following day, October 26, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune officially endorsed the decision to dispatch ANP units to Niger. This strategic move, which responds to a direct request from Niamey authorities, also signals an improvement in bilateral relations between Algeria and Niger, fostering enhanced cooperation on security and strategic interests.
