Council of Nation Approves Niger Energy Asset Protection
The Algerian Council of the Nation has approved the deployment of a military contingent to Niger, aiming to secure Algerian oil investments and the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline project. This decision reinforces Algeria's commitment to protecting its economic interests.

The Algerian Council of the Nation formally approved the deployment of a military contingent to Niger on October 25, 2026. This significant decision is aimed at enhancing the security of Algeria's vital energy investments and infrastructure within Niger, marking a strategic shift in the nation's defense policy to protect its economic interests abroad.
The approved measure specifically targets the safeguarding of oil installations operated by state-owned Sonatrach and its subsidiary SIPEX, particularly focusing on the Kafra exploratory block. Furthermore, the deployment is intended to protect the future Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline project, which is planned to transport natural gas to Europe, underscoring Algeria's role as an energy hub.
This authorization adheres to Article 91 of the Algerian Constitution, as amended in 2020, which mandates a two-thirds parliamentary approval for the deployment of troops outside national borders. The parliamentary passage is characterized as a preventative authorization rather than an immediate offensive action, reflecting a measured approach to securing Algeria's hydrocarbon assets and broader strategic interests in the Sahel region.
