Dacca Solicits Algerian Energy Companies for Expertise, Training

Bangladesh has formally requested the technical expertise of Algerian energy giants Sonatrach and Sonelgaz, alongside training programs for its engineers, to navigate its increasing energy challenges. Facing declining local reserves and a rising electricity demand, Dacca is redefining its energy security by prioritizing Algerian technology transfer and operational know-how. This collaborative shift, described as a "historic step" by Bangladeshi Minister of Energy, Electricity, and Mineral Resources, Iqbal Hasan Mahmood, aims to enhance national exploration efforts and strengthen professional competencies.

The expanded cooperation follows a protocol of understanding signed in October, which established a government-to-government supply mechanism for liquefied natural gas (LNG), liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), and various petroleum products. Beyond securing new supplies from a reliable provider, Bangladesh intends to leverage Algerian expertise to develop its own gas and oil resources and infrastructure. The Algerian Petroleum Institute (IAP) has indicated its readiness to host and train Bangladeshi technical staff, with discussions also encompassing the joint development of refineries and LNG terminals.

This evolving partnership extends beyond hydrocarbons, transforming commercial discussions into a comprehensive collaboration involving engineering and technical training. For Algeria, this development presents a dual lever for international growth, particularly for public groups like Sonatrach, by converting ministerial agreements into firm supply contracts and petroleum service provisions. Algerian officials have also confirmed the nation's readiness to meet Bangladesh's agricultural fertilizer needs and expressed interest in Dacca's textile industry expertise, signaling a broader economic engagement that positions Algeria as a strategic gateway to African and European markets.
