Mining Quay Piling Reaches 1,092 of 1,322 Piles

Work on the Annaba Phosphate Port expansion project is progressing, with 1,092 out of 1,322 planned piles completed for the new mining quay. This strategic infrastructure aims to facilitate Algeria's first enriched phosphate exports by March 2027.

Mining Quay Piling Reaches 1,092 of 1,322 Piles

The expansion project for the Annaba Phosphate Port is demonstrating steady advancement, with significant progress reported across various construction phases. The Ministry of Public Works and Basic Infrastructure confirmed ongoing development on critical components, setting the stage for Algeria's first enriched phosphate exports by March 2027, as ordered by the President. This timeline is central to the project, which aims to enhance the nation's export capabilities.

Detailed reports from the ministry highlight substantial achievements, particularly in the construction of the new 82-hectare mining quay. Out of a total of 1,322 planned piles, 1,092 have been completed, signifying a rapid construction pace of 7 to 10 piles installed daily. Concurrently, superstructure work for the quay wall is in progress, with 88 reinforced concrete beams and 880 precast reinforced concrete slabs already finished. Preparations are also underway for pouring the concrete for the top slab, which will form the quay's main structure.

Further progress is noted in ground preparation and maritime operations. Over 2.5 million cubic meters of backfill have been executed, including approximately 1.5 million cubic meters on the rear platform using marine sands. Soil characteristics are being enhanced through dynamic compaction and prefabricated vertical drains to manage settlement. In support of maritime works, 4.2 million out of 5.5 million tons of rock and stone blocks have been placed to extend the old dike and provide protection against waves and currents. Additionally, dredging operations have extracted 10.6 million out of 13 million cubic meters to achieve the required 16-meter depth in the basin.

This port expansion is an integral part of Algeria's broader integrated phosphate project. It is designed to facilitate the transportation of extracted ore from Tébessa to Annaba for export to external markets, utilizing the eastern mining railway currently under construction. The consistent progression across all aspects of the Annaba Phosphate Port project underscores its strategic importance for Algeria's economic development and diversification.
