The EHSN Les Glycines Hospital in Algiers successfully performed Algeria's first surgical interventions for benign prostatic hyperplasia on Friday, November 6, 2026. These landmark operations utilized the advanced Holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP) technique, marking a significant advancement in the nation's medical capabilities for treating this condition. The procedures were supervised by internationally renowned Spanish specialist, Professor Dr. Fernando Gómez Sancha, who is credited with developing the HoLEP method.
The HoLEP technique employs a Holmium laser for the endoscopic removal of prostatic tissues that cause prostate enlargement, allowing for the extraction of targeted tissues in a single block. This method is recognized as a major surgical advancement. Over 100 Algerian urologists observed the interventions, with some following via videoconference from regional EHSN hospitals in Oran and Sidi Bel Abbès, and others attending from Hôtel Mercure in coordination with the Algerian Association of Urologists.
