Algiers International Book Fair Draws 51 Nations to Capital

The 29th Algiers International Book Fair (SILA) concluded today at the Palais des expositions des Pins maritimes, marking the end of ten days of literary activities, intellectual encounters, and editorial discoveries. Held under the high patronage of President of the Republic Abdelmadjid Tebboune, this edition, themed “Tomorrow between the pages of a book,” welcomed 1,567 publishing houses representing 51 countries, including 350 Algerian exhibitors. Visitors had access to an offering of nearly 300,000 titles, transforming the book fair into a significant space for interaction among authors, publishers, and readers. Saudi Arabia participated as the guest of honor, presenting a cultural program highlighting its heritage, arts, and editorial output.

Beyond its commercial offerings, the fair featured a diverse program of conferences, debates, literary meetings, poetic recitals, and signing sessions. Special attention was given to young authors and the breadth of cultural expressions. National contributions were prominent, with the Haut-Commissariat à l’amazighité presenting approximately fifteen new publications related to Amazigh language, history, literature, and heritage. The Entreprise nationale des arts graphiques (ENAG) unveiled over a hundred new releases accompanied by signing sessions, while ANEP expanded its catalog with three new publications focused on history, political essays, and sports careers.

The latter days of the program emphasized history and memory, including a 3D mapping display in the Gourara pavilion that allowed visitors to rediscover significant periods of Algeria's past, from antiquity through the struggle for independence and state building. A dedicated conference marked the centenary of Algerian theater, honoring artist Sid Ahmed Agoumi and highlighting the role of performing arts in political awareness during the colonial era. Discussions also covered Palestinian literature, Sahrawi culture and resistance, and the intersection of artificial intelligence and national identity. The presence of international delegations and foreign authors further strengthened the event's global dimension.

The official closing ceremony included the presentation of several distinctions, notably the “My First Book” prize for young authors under 35, a new award dedicated to translation, and the prize for the best stand. An homage was also paid to Hamidou Messaoudi, a former SILA commissioner. After ten days of exchange and discovery, this edition reaffirmed the Algiers International Book Fair's position as one of the country's primary cultural events, successfully uniting national and international editorial production, literary creation, and critical discussions on major cultural and historical issues.
