Netherlands Commends Algerian Regional Stability, Plans 2027 Cooperation Roadmap

Algeria and the Netherlands have agreed to establish a roadmap for enhanced bilateral cooperation, with concrete plans to be formalized in 2027. This development followed the visit of Dutch Foreign Minister Tom Berendsen to Algeria on November 2-3, 2026, during which he held discussions with his Algerian counterpart Ahmed Attaf and President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. Minister Berendsen specifically commended Algeria’s efforts to promote regional stability, recognizing the nation as a pivotal partner for the Netherlands in addressing global geopolitical shifts and challenges related to security, stability, sustainable energy, and mobility. The forthcoming year, 2027, will also mark the celebration of the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries, building upon a historical friendship spanning over four centuries.

The agreed framework includes plans for the next sessions of political consultations and the Joint Committee for Economic and Technological Cooperation to convene in 2027, aiming to define specific cooperation priorities and implementation timelines. Key areas for expanded partnership encompass renewable energy, including green hydrogen initiatives, agriculture, and water resource management. Further opportunities for collaboration were identified in transport, logistics, the knowledge economy, and the support of startup enterprises, alongside mutual efforts in training, capacity building, and cultural, scientific, and humanitarian exchanges. A draft memorandum of understanding concerning renewable energies and green hydrogen is currently under negotiation to solidify these commitments.

Discussions also focused on reinforcing coordination and the exchange of expertise in migration and consular affairs. Both parties committed to adopting a comprehensive and balanced approach to migration challenges, considering the interests of all stakeholders. Additionally, efforts to strengthen trade and foster mutually beneficial economic partnerships were explored, alongside joint initiatives to address security threats in the Sahel region. The ministers reaffirmed their steadfast commitment to the principles of international law, the United Nations Charter, and multilateral diplomacy as essential tools for advancing peace, security, and stability across the Euro-Mediterranean region and the African continent.
