Niger Receives Algerian Fuel Convoy Under Joint Military Escort
Algeria dispatched its first major fuel shipment to Niger, comprising 53 trucks carrying 1.6 million liters of gasoline, under military escort. This initiative addresses fuel shortages and strengthens bilateral energy cooperation.

Algeria has dispatched its first major fuel shipment to neighboring Niger, with a convoy of 53 trucks carrying 1.6 million liters of gasoline arriving in Agadez, northern Niger, over the weekend. The state-owned Algerian company Naftal transported the fuel, originating from the Sebha refinery in Algeria’s Adrar province. This significant delivery was conducted under a military escort, with security provided by troops from both Algeria and Niger, to ensure the safe passage of the essential supplies. The initiative directly addresses a severe fuel crisis in Niger, characterized by shortages of petrol and diesel.
Nigerien authorities expressed gratitude for Algeria’s facilitations in expediting and securing the logistical aspects of the shipment. The reception ceremony in Agadez was attended by high-ranking officials, including Niger’s Oil Minister Hamadou Tinni, regional governor Major General Boulama Issa Ibra, and Algeria’s Ambassador to Niger, Ahmed Saadi. Minister Tinni lauded the "quality of bilateral relations" and affirmed that this operation reflects the "depth of rapprochement" and "real cooperation" between the two nations. This delivery follows agreements signed between Algeria's Sonatrach and Niger's SONIDEP in 2024 and 2026, which stipulate the purchase of petroleum products at preferential prices.
This fuel dispatch is part of broader efforts by Algeria to strengthen energy and security cooperation with Niger. Algeria's Parliament recently approved the deployment of units from the National People's Army to Niger, specifically to secure joint energy investments and economic facilities. Beyond fuel supply, the two countries are collaboratively pursuing key energy projects, such as the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline and the joint exploitation of the Kafra oil field. Algeria has also provided technical assistance, including Sonatrach technicians addressing an oil well incident in Agadem and a team from the National Agency for Hydrocarbon Resources Valuation working to update Niger’s hydrocarbon sector database. Further support included an Algerian national electricity company team establishing a major power generation station in northern Niger. These concerted actions underscore Algeria's commitment to regional stability and development through practical and strategic partnerships.
