The Ministry of National Defense announced, in a statement issued today, the launch of the second operation to clear radioactive waste from the "Beryl E2" test tunnel site in the In Ekker area of Tamanrasset (Sixth Military Region).
The statement explained that the operation is being carried out with national expertise and capabilities, under the supervision of the Ministry of National Defense and in coordination with the National Agency for the Rehabilitation of the Former French Nuclear Test and Explosion Sites in Southern Algeria, in accordance with applicable national and international standards.
The Ministry added that the operation continues the work of clearing the former French nuclear test sites in the south of the country, and coincides with the celebrations marking the 72nd anniversary of the outbreak of the glorious Liberation Revolution.
Citing the French side's evasion of its criminal responsibility and its refusal to hand over the records and maps of the burial sites of this waste, which continues to hinder development in In Ekker (Tamanrasset) and Reggane (Adrar), the statement affirmed that national experts intend to carry out the complete decontamination of the French colonizer's nuclear remnants in the Greater South and to rehabilitate the sites in the future.
It also noted that this complex operation, for which the State has mobilized all material and human resources, represents a real challenge for national experts, who will work to ensure its success in strict compliance with safety requirements, protocols, and international standards on identifying radioactive zones, collecting nuclear waste, and storing it in concrete containers designated for that purpose.
