Lawrence Mayor, Delegation Invited to Algeria

The Algerian government has formally invited a United States delegation, including Lawrence, Kansas, Mayor Brad Finkeldei, to visit the country. Mayor Finkeldei confirmed receiving an official letter from the Algerian ambassador, extending an invitation for him and a delegation from Lawrence to travel to Algeria. While specific dates are being arranged, a visit could potentially occur as early as October 2026 or at a mutually convenient time.
This recent outreach builds upon existing connections between Algerian officials and Lawrence leaders. The Algerian government previously engaged with Lawrence when the city hosted the Algerian men's national team during the FIFA World Cup. Following the team's arrival, the Algerian ambassador visited Lawrence, presenting the city with a piece of pottery now displayed in City Hall. The current invitation also extends to Mayor Quinton Lucas of Kansas City, Missouri, and includes Lawrence Police Chief Rich Lockhart, along with three members of his department—Lts. David Ernst and Mark Unruh, and Detective Meghan Bardwell—who assisted with World Cup security and logistics.
Though many logistical details for the proposed trip are still being finalized, Mayor Finkeldei expressed confidence in making the visit a reality, stating a commitment to "find a way to make it work." Furthermore, the board of Sister Cities Lawrence has previously engaged in discussions with Algerians regarding the prospect of establishing a future sister city relationship, underscoring a growing interest in fostering deeper ties. This initiative highlights Algeria's proactive diplomatic engagement and its commitment to cultivating international partnerships.
