Nation Honors 1961 Massacre Martyrs with Nationwide Minute of Silence

Algeria today formally commemorates the 65th anniversary of the October 17, 1961 massacres, with a minute of silence observed nationwide and at Algerian diplomatic and consular missions abroad. This national observance, held at 11:00 AM, honors the martyrs of the events in Paris on that date.

The annual minute of silence on October 17 was formalized by a decision from President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. This decision is enshrined in Presidential Decree No. 21-392, which dedicates this national remembrance to the sacrifices of the Algerian diaspora and acknowledges their significant contributions to the national liberation movement.

A statement from the Ministry of Mujahideen and Rights Holders confirmed that this commemoration serves to pay tribute to the lives lost in the 1961 massacres, reinforcing Algeria's historical memory and recognition of those who contributed to its freedom.
