Nineteen Nations Condemn Colombia’s Jerusalem Embassy Move

Algeria, alongside 18 other nations, has jointly condemned Colombia's decision to open its embassy in Jerusalem. The foreign ministers of these countries expressed strong disapproval of the move, which they view as a direct violation of international resolutions regarding the city's status. This collective stance underscores a shared commitment to upholding international law concerning the status of Jerusalem.

The joint statement from the 19 nations, including Saudi Arabia, Palestine, Jordan, Indonesia, Pakistan, Turkey, Djibouti, Sudan, Syria, Somalia, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Malaysia, Egypt, and Yemen, asserted that Colombia's action contradicts relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions. Specifically, resolutions 476 and 478, both issued in 1980, were cited for rejecting any attempts to alter Jerusalem's character or status and calling for diplomatic missions to be withdrawn from the city. The ministers reiterated that any decision or measure aimed at changing the legal or historical status of occupied Jerusalem is null and void, without any legal effect, and undermines international efforts towards a just and lasting peace based on a two-state solution.

In their unified declaration, the foreign ministers urged the Colombian government to reconsider and reverse its decision. They called on Colombia to fulfill its obligations under international law and refrain from any actions that could infringe upon the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people. This includes reaffirming the right of the Palestinian people to establish an independent and sovereign state, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
