Trans-Saharan Fiber Link Between Niger and Algeria Activated

A new trans-Saharan fiber optic link connecting Algeria and Niger has been activated, establishing a crucial cross-border data route between the two nations. The official launch ceremony, co-chaired by the communications ministers of both countries, took place in Assamaka, situated in Niger's Agadez region near the Algerian border. Algeria's communications minister stated the completed In Guezzam–Arlit–Agadez link is operational with a technical capacity of 100 Gb/s from its start of service.

This significant infrastructure development is designed to elevate cross-border bandwidth, enhance the security of data flows, and reinforce network resilience across the region. The initiative is also set to support the expansion of digital public services and commerce. It marks a key step in a wider trans-Saharan project that aims to interconnect Algeria with Niger, Nigeria, Chad, Mali, and Mauritania, though individual national sections are progressing at different stages.

Algeria's national telecommunications backbone plays a central role, extending 2,548 kilometers from Algiers to In Guezzam at the Niger border, forming a critical component of this newly operational bilateral connection. As a long-distance core for communications, this fiber backbone is fundamental for carrying large volumes of data between network operators and countries. Such foundational infrastructure advancements are vital for enabling access to cloud-based models and services, thereby supporting future digital progress and connectivity for communities and businesses in the region.
