Nation Ranks Second Worldwide in Education Spending, UN Agency Finds

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), a United Nations institution, has positioned Algeria as second globally for public spending on education, dedicating nearly 9% of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to the sector. This significant allocation highlights a resolute state strategy aimed at fostering human capital development.
This substantial financial commitment, detailed within WIPO's Global Innovation Index 2026, reflects a considerable mobilization of budgetary resources by the Algerian state. These investments are directed towards modernizing school infrastructure, providing support for educators, and ensuring universal, free access to education, spanning from primary levels through to university.
Further underlining its educational priorities, the nation also secured the second position worldwide for public funding allocated per secondary student, calculated proportionally to GDP per capita. Additionally, Algeria ranked third globally in the composite integrated education index, with these expenditures recognized not merely as operational costs but as crucial structural investments designed to enhance the educational system and strengthen human capital.
