Algiers – Members of Algeria’s two parliamentary chambers commended the directives issued by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune during the opening of the Government-Wilayas meeting, held on December 24 and 25, 2024. They highlighted the outcomes of the meeting as crucial foundations for enhancing the performance of local communities.
Vice President of the People’s National Assembly, Mr. Zouheir Nasri, emphasized the significance of holding this meeting at the start of the president’s new term, as it outlined the roadmap for local governance. He noted that the forthcoming enactment of the municipal and provincial laws will focus on wealth creation and local investment by granting municipal council presidents broader management powers.
Similarly, MP Zakaria Belkhir, representing the Movement of Society for Peace, described the meeting as an essential platform for discussing development projects, evaluating progress under new laws, and reviewing forward-looking strategies for local communities. He praised the expansion of municipal council presidents’ authority and the push for digitalization, which he argued will strengthen local governance and decentralization.
Independent MP Lahcen Lebaid acknowledged the meeting’s significant outcomes, including the emphasis on improving local development and governance. He lauded the president’s firm instructions for implementing major projects and broadening elected officials’ authority, enabling municipalities to forge broader investment partnerships.
Mr. Kamal Ben Khelouf, a National Construction Movement representative, highlighted the meeting’s central message: fostering continuous consultation between the executive and local administrations. He also pointed out the workshops during the meeting, which facilitated discussions on critical issues, enhancing the execution of development goals.
In his remarks, Mr. Saïd Arous, leader of the presidential third parliamentary group in the Council of the Nation, underscored the alignment of municipal and provincial laws with Algeria’s investment ambitions. He praised the decision to expand the powers of local elected officials, describing it as a vital step toward empowering those closest to citizens’ needs.
Likewise, Council of the Nation member Fouad Sebouta emphasized President Tebboune’s consistent policy of dialogue and consultation. He asserted that the meeting’s outcomes represent a new boost for local development, supported by substantial budget allocations for the sector.
The Government-Wilayas meeting served as a platform for addressing gaps, issuing firm directives for project implementation, and advancing decentralization—a testament to the administration’s commitment to elevating local governance.
