Algiers – The President and CEO of Sonatrach, Mr. Rachid Hachichi, participated on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, in a business forum held in Rome, Italy. The forum brought together companies from countries involved in the “Southern Hydrogen Corridor” (SoutH2 Corridor) project, according to a statement released by Sonatrach.
The forum was organized on the sidelines of the first ministerial meeting of energy ministers from the participating countries (Algeria, Tunisia, Italy, Germany, and Austria). Mr. Hachichi was part of a high-level delegation led by the Minister of State, Minister of Energy, Mines, and Renewable Energies, Mr. Mohamed Arkab, according to the same source.
The event featured the participation of several companies from the countries involved in the project, including Algeria’s national corporations Sonatrach and Sonelgaz, the German company VNG, the Italian company SNAM, the SEA Corridor partnership (a joint venture between Eni and SNAM), and Austria’s Verbund Green Hydrogen.
The forum aimed to “outline a roadmap for implementing the future phases of the ambitious Southern Hydrogen Corridor project,” the statement added. This initiative follows the signing of a memorandum of understanding in Oran, Algeria, on October 14, 2024, between Sonatrach, Sonelgaz, and the aforementioned companies, which was aimed at advancing the project.
According to the statement, the ministerial meeting culminated in the signing of a joint political declaration of intent regarding the Southern Hydrogen Corridor project. The signatory countries reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation to develop this strategic project, which connects production sites in Algeria to Europe. This collaboration will be facilitated through the establishment of a five-party joint working group.
This initiative underscores Algeria’s pivotal role in the transition to renewable energies and the global pursuit of green hydrogen solutions. The Southern Hydrogen Corridor, which is designed to link Algerian hydrogen production facilities with European markets, stands as a cornerstone of international energy cooperation, advancing sustainability and energy security for all stakeholders.
