Algeria-Uruguay: Strengthening Parliamentary Cooperation and Consolidating Bilateral Relations

Algiers – President of the National People’s Assembly, Ibrahim Bougali, discussed during his official visit to Uruguay, representing President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, with top Uruguayan officials ways to enhance parliamentary cooperation and deepen bilateral relations, opening new avenues for partnership, according to a statement released on Sunday by the National People’s Assembly.

The statement noted that Mr. Bougali was received during his official visit to Uruguay to participate in the inauguration of the newly elected President of Uruguay, Luis Lacalle Pou, by the Vice President and Speaker of the Uruguayan Parliament, Carolina Cosse. Mr. Bougali congratulated the Uruguayan leadership on the election, emphasizing “the depth of bilateral relations and the commitment of both countries to strengthen them.” He also praised Uruguay’s “consistent support for the Palestinian and Sahrawi causes.”

On this occasion, both parties discussed ways to activate parliamentary cooperation through parliamentary diplomacy to bolster relations and open new avenues for partnership. President Bougali highlighted “the importance of enhancing dialogue between Africa and Latin America,” noting Algeria’s efforts to build bridges of cooperation with parliaments in the region.

Speaker Cosse expressed her appreciation for Algeria’s participation in the inauguration ceremony, commending the role of parliamentary diplomacy in enhancing international relations. She also expressed the Uruguayan Parliament’s readiness to cooperate with Algeria to strengthen joint parliamentary work and support global just causes.

In this context, President Bougali met with the President of the Chamber of Deputies of Uruguay, Vladimir Sanguinetti, on Friday in Montevideo. The meeting focused on ways to enhance parliamentary cooperation between the two countries and activate parliamentary diplomacy to support common interests.

Mr. Bougali emphasized the importance of “establishing a parliamentary friendship group between the two legislative bodies,” commending Uruguay’s “support for the Sahrawi and Palestinian causes.” He also highlighted “Algeria’s diplomatic efforts in defending the rights of oppressed peoples.”

For his part, President Sanguinetti expressed his support for the right of the Sahrawi and Palestinian peoples to self-determination, praising the Algerian Revolution as an “inspiration” for peoples fighting for freedom.

Both sides agreed to continue coordinating to enhance parliamentary cooperation, serving the interests of both countries on the international stage, according to the statement.
