National Day for People with Disabilities: The National Council for Human Rights Calls for Joint Efforts to Address the Challenges Facing This Group

On the occasion of the National Day for Persons with Disabilities, the National Council for Human Rights issued a statement calling for the need to join efforts to address the challenges faced by this segment of society. It commended the legal mechanisms that the Algerian legislator has established to protect and promote this group.

In this context, the council praised the efforts made by Algeria in the legislative field, starting from the law on “Protection of Persons with Disabilities and Their Promotion,” which was issued in 2002, up to the new law on the protection of persons with disabilities issued in 2025, aimed at enhancing mechanisms for care and support for this group, reflecting the social nature of the state derived from national references.

In this regard, it urged “the speeding up of issuing the implementing regulations for this new law” along with the establishment of the National Council for Persons with Disabilities, which can provide proposals and recommendations in the field of protecting this group.

It also addressed the main obstacles faced by persons with disabilities, calling on employers to “commit to reserving a respectable percentage of job positions” for them. It also stressed the need to “conduct a comprehensive inventory of all cases of disability and classify them using scientific methods, and intensify awareness-raising campaigns to create a societal harmony that supports the integration of persons with disabilities.”

In connection therewith, the council highlighted the importance of strengthening health services, particularly in early detection of disability cases, and making special efforts in preventing accidents leading to disability, such as road accidents.

Finally, the National Council for Human Rights recorded its “commitment to work with all stakeholders to enhance the rights of persons with disabilities and ensure their well-being,” renewing its call to public authorities, civil society, and the media to “work towards everything that facilitates the lives of this group” and enables them to play a role as active members of society fully integrated into social life.
