GEAT Complex in Batna: Agreements Between Sonelgaz and General Electric Vernova for Export to New Markets

Algiers – On Tuesday, April 29, 2025, Sonelgaz signed several memoranda of understanding with General Electric Vernova in London, United Kingdom, aimed at exporting electrical and gas equipment from the General Electric Algeria Turbines (GEAT) factory in Batna to new international markets, according to a statement from Sonelgaz.

The agreements were signed by Sonelgaz, represented by its CEO Mourad Adjal, and General Electric Vernova, represented by Joseph Anis, Vice President for Gas Power, and Philippe Piron, CEO for Electrification Systems. The memoranda focus on exporting electrical and gas equipment, particularly gas turbines and grid equipment for energy transmission.

Sonelgaz described these agreements as “a new step” in its partnership with General Electric Vernova, emphasizing the export of gas turbines and high- and extra-high-voltage power station equipment through their joint GEAT factory in Batna. This initiative aims to “strengthen Sonelgaz’s presence in international energy industry markets.”

The agreements reflect “the shared commitment of both parties to develop their partnership” and represent “a significant step toward achieving national industrial development goals, increasing local value-added, and capturing shares in international markets,” the statement noted.

The memoranda cover the local manufacturing of equipment at the GEAT factory in Batna, including the marketing of various types of gas turbines and high- and extra-high-voltage power station equipment, with a 35% share of the total capacity for projects exceeding 20 gigawatts. The export destination is a Middle Eastern country. Additionally, the agreements include the export of two gas turbines, along with accompanying energy transmission equipment, to another Middle Eastern country in the fourth quarter of 2025.

The partnership also involves planning for training at the GEAT factory in Batna to transfer expertise in supervision and control. Sonelgaz highlighted that this cooperation will enhance its role as a key player in bolstering national energy industry capabilities and strengthening its regional and international presence.

The statement added that this partnership aligns with recent Sonelgaz initiatives, consistent with the vision of Algeria’s highest authorities to promote a competitive local industry, support economic diversification, and contribute effectively to exporting non-hydrocarbon products. It also underscores Sonelgaz’s commitment to creating qualified job opportunities, enhancing human resource skills, and fostering a more diversified economy open to foreign markets.
