ALGIERS – Directives issued by the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, during the latest cabinet meeting to facilitate the reception of the national community residing abroad during the summer season represent a significant cornerstone and a powerful gesture of support for the diaspora. These instructions aim to enhance the mechanisms for welcoming and caring for Algerians living abroad, particularly during the summer holiday period. The President has mandated that all necessary measures be taken to “ensure better care and provide useful services” for members of the Algerian community at airports and ports. Throughout the summer, holders of Algerian passports will benefit from simplified procedures to facilitate their entry into the homeland.A Strong Commitment to the DiasporaRepresentatives of the Algerian community abroad have widely praised the President’s initiative, viewing it as a fulfillment of his commitments. Nacer Khebbat, Secretary-General of the Movement for the Dynamics of the Algerian Community in France (MODAF), lauded this “strong gesture” from the President, which he stated demonstrates “the attention he pays to members of the community wherever they are”. Khebbat told the Algerian Press Service (APS) that this decision is a continuation of the President’s pledges and is a “key cornerstone in building a sustainable and structured relationship for the Algerian diaspora with its homeland”.Fares Rahmani, a Member of Parliament representing the national community abroad, expressed his gratitude for the President’s focus on the concerns of the diaspora at airports, ports, and consular services. He also highlighted the measures aimed at facilitating investment by community members in their home country.Concrete and Awaited MeasuresSeveral specific measures have been met with particular satisfaction:Simplified Entry: A highly anticipated decision allows Algerians with expired passports to enter the country, provided they also hold a foreign passport valid for at least six months. This is seen as a crucial and “useful” measure, especially given the high demand for passport renewals at consulates this year.Green Corridors: “Green corridors” have been established at ports and airports specifically for Algerian families arriving from abroad. These corridors allow for expedited passage through customs and police checkpoints.Vehicle Entry: Facilitations have been introduced to allow families to enter with their vehicles through various Algerian ports, a significant step in easing the return of families for the summer season.Reduced Travel Costs: Saad Laanani, an MP representing the community in France, noted the “positive impact” of these measures, which include the possibility of purchasing travel tickets at lower prices.Strengthening National TiesThese arrangements are seen as reflecting a “strong political will to involve the diaspora in the path of national development”. Laanani affirmed that the Algerian community, particularly in France, is “very pleased with the attention paid by the President of the Republic” to simplify their return to the homeland.Nadjeh Djemaï, coordinator of civil society associations for the Algerian community abroad, praised the “tireless efforts” of the President, stating that since taking office, he has “always given great importance to the concerns of Algerians residing abroad”. He also recalled other significant arrangements, such as those facilitating the repatriation of the remains of deceased Algerians and bringing consular services closer to the community for obtaining official documents. These measures underscore the deep commitment of President Tebboune to the national diaspora, a commitment he consistently reaffirms in his meetings with community members during his visits abroad, stressing the necessity of addressing their concerns.
