Algeria Vows to Tackle Root Causes of Conflict at UN Security Council, Highlighting Major African Development Initiatives

NEW YORK (United Nations) – Algeria has powerfully reaffirmed its commitment to international peace and security, vowing to cooperate with all international partners to eliminate the deep-rooted causes of conflict. Speaking at a UN Security Council meeting on “Poverty, underdevelopment, and conflict,” Algeria’s Permanent Representative, Ambassador Amar Bendjama, outlined a comprehensive vision for global stability founded on sustainable development and multilateral cooperation.A Principled Stand on Peace and DevelopmentAmbassador Bendjama emphasized that as the world nears the 80th anniversary of the UN Charter, Algeria’s dedication to multilateral action for peace is not merely a choice, but an “authentic commitment to peace and sustainable development for the entire world”. He noted that humanity is currently facing unprecedented crises and complex new threats that cast a dark shadow over the socio-economic situation, particularly in developing countries. The ambassador warned that the lack of progress on global development targets, such as the 2030 Agenda, has a direct and devastating impact on poverty, especially in regions plagued by conflict. This “unfortunate trend,” he stressed, creates fertile ground for the spread of extremism, violence, and terrorism. To counter this, Algeria advocates for “comprehensive and sustainable solutions” that give equal priority to security and development, thereby creating the necessary conditions for lasting peace.Championing African Solutions and Effective UN ActionIn his address, Ambassador Bendjama called for UN peacekeeping operations to be viewed from a broader perspective that does not impede development efforts carried out through other mechanisms. He urged a comprehensive approach where UN missions are designed to actively support development and promote human rights through effective international bodies.Stressing the importance of regional partnership, the ambassador called for strengthening cooperation with the African Union to ensure shared visions, optimal use of resources, and actions that meet Africa’s development needs while respecting the continent’s priorities and Agenda 2063. He also highlighted the critical challenge of funding for peace and mediation initiatives, demanding a “firm commitment to permanent, flexible, sustainable, and predictable financing” from the international community and financial institutions.Algeria’s Leadership Through ActionAmbassador Bendjama underscored that Algeria has always considered security and development to be the foundational pillars of its regional policy, especially in Africa. He pointed to several major structural projects recently launched by Algeria as proof of this commitment:The Trans-Saharan HighwayThe Saharan fiber optic projectThe Trans-Saharan Gas PipelineFurthermore, he announced the establishment of the Algerian Agency for International Cooperation, Solidarity, and Development, endowed with a budget of one billion dollars, to assist other African nations in their development efforts. This, he affirmed, is a tangible demonstration of Algeria’s proactive role in fostering stability and prosperity across the continent.
