Algeria Assumes Presidency of the African Union’s Peace and Security Council

Algeria officially began its presidency of the African Union Peace and Security Council (AUPSC) on Friday, taking the lead throughout the month of August 2025. During its tenure, Algeria will work closely with other member states to advance the AU’s peace and security agenda, addressing pressing security challenges across the continent. The Algerian presidency is expected to oversee key meetings focused on the situations in Sudan and South Sudan, as well as thematic sessions on governance and early warning systems. These include coordination efforts involving the African Peer Review Mechanism, the African Union’s Counter-Terrorism Center, and AFRIPOL. Algeria’s leadership will also host discussions on the framework of the AUPSC’s Counter-Terrorism Sub-Committee and convene strategic coordination with African members of the UN Security Council. This active agenda underscores Algeria’s strong commitment to continental stability and reflects its central role in conflict prevention and peacebuilding efforts in Africa. Elected to the Council in April 2025 for a three-year term, Algeria reaffirms its leadership in promoting peace and security across the continent.
