World Bank Reclassifies Algeria in Upper-Middle-Income Tier for Second Consecutive Year

Algiers – The World Bank has once again ranked Algeria in the upper-middle-income tier in its annual classification of member economies, coinciding with the start of its fiscal year on July 1. Algeria now joins ten African nations such as South Africa and Gabon in this category, along with regional peers like Iran, Libya, and Iraq. The upgrade, first granted in 2024, was attributed to a comprehensive overhaul of Algeria’s national account statistics by the National Office of Statistics, aligning them with international standards. Contributing factors include increased gross national income, sustained economic growth, expanded public investment, strengthened productive sectors, and improved fiscal governance. Additionally, advancements in data evaluation and statistical coverage, especially for the informal economy, played a key role. This year’s report also highlights broader regional progress, with 35% of MENA countries now classified as high-income, and a notable decline in low-income classifications across Sub-Saharan Africa. The World Bank categorizes economies based on gross national income per capita, with Algeria’s standing reflecting its upward trajectory in sustainable development and global economic integration.
