Algeria has strongly condemned the failure of the UN Security Council to adopt a resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza, after the United States vetoed the draft despite support from the other 14 members. The move was described by Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Ammar Benjamaa, as “another stain on the conscience of humanity.”
Speaking at the UN headquarters in New York, Ambassador Benjamaa expressed deep regret and issued an emotional apology to the Palestinian people, particularly in Gaza, who continue to endure relentless attacks and a worsening humanitarian crisis.
“We Algerians hear you, brothers and sisters in Palestine. Forgive us—especially you in Gaza, where fire consumes you and rubble suffocates you. Forgive us because this Council failed to save your children, your women, your doctors, and your journalists,” Benjamaa said.
He highlighted the shocking toll of Israel’s aggression: more than 18,000 children killed, over 4,000 women martyred, 1,400 medical workers, and at least 250 journalists targeted. In addition, more than 500 humanitarian workers have lost their lives.
“Protected by Bias, Not by International Law”
The Algerian diplomat condemned what he called the systematic protection of Israel by certain powers within the international system, stressing that such impunity enables ongoing massacres, forced displacement, starvation, and attacks on hospitals and schools.
“Israel is not shielded by international law but by bias,” Benjamaa declared, adding that every act of impunity erodes humanity itself.
Algeria’s Firm Commitment to Palestine
Despite the setback, Algeria reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the Palestinian cause. Ambassador Benjamaa stressed that Algeria, under the leadership of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, will “never abandon the Palestinians” and will continue to demand the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with Al-Quds (Jerusalem) as its capital.
“History will not judge us by our speeches but by our actions,” he warned, calling on the international community to choose between stopping genocide or being complicit in it.
