Algeria has achieved a significant milestone in higher education, topping the North African region and securing the second position in Africa for the number of universities included in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings. This achievement marks a considerable leap forward for the Algerian academic landscape.
In a celebratory post on his official Facebook page, the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Kamel Baddari, congratulated Algeria on this accomplishment. He stated, “Congratulations to Algeria for securing the first position in North Africa and the second in Africa in terms of the number of universities ranked in the THE World University Rankings.”
The 2026 edition of the rankings features 28 Algerian higher education institutions, a notable increase from the 26 institutions ranked in the 2025 edition. This growth signifies the continuous development of the national university system and the improvement in academic and research performance.
According to Minister Baddari, the University of Sidi Bel Abbes and the University of El Oued jointly hold the top national ranking. Both universities are placed within the 1200-1500 range globally, demonstrating the balanced geographical distribution of academic excellence across the country’s various regions. This accomplishment reflects the success of the national higher education and scientific research policy and confirms the advanced position that Algerian universities are now occupying regionally and continentally.
This achievement is a testament to Algeria’s commitment to investing in its higher education sector and promoting research and innovation. The increased representation in the Times Higher Education rankings not only enhances the reputation of Algerian universities on the global stage but also attracts international students and researchers, fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange. The focus on improving academic standards and research output has yielded tangible results, positioning Algeria as a leader in higher education within the Maghreb region and beyond.
The Algerian government’s continued support for higher education is crucial for sustaining this momentum and further enhancing the quality and competitiveness of its universities. By prioritizing investment in infrastructure, faculty development, and research initiatives, Algeria can solidify its position as a hub for academic excellence and innovation in Africa.
