Spain General Strike: Protesting Palestinian ‘Genocide’ in Gaza

Madrid, Spain - Spain is bracing for a nationwide general strike on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, called by leading labor unions and student organizations. The strike is a direct response to what organizers are denouncing as a "genocide" being perpetrated against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, according to the Palestinian News Agency (WAFA).

The call for the strike has garnered significant momentum across various sectors, with unions representing workers in transportation, education, healthcare, and industry all pledging their participation. Student groups from major universities have also announced widespread walkouts and demonstrations in solidarity with the Palestinian people.

Organizers cite the ongoing conflict and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, which has persisted for two years, as the primary drivers behind the strike. They accuse the Israeli government of disproportionate force and collective punishment, leading to a dire situation for the civilian population. The strike aims to pressure the Spanish government and the international community to take stronger action to protect Palestinian lives and hold Israel accountable for its actions.

“We cannot stand idly by while innocent Palestinians are subjected to systematic violence and oppression,” stated a spokesperson for the leading labor union, Comisiones Obreras (CCOO). “This strike is a powerful message that the Spanish people demand an end to the bloodshed and a just resolution to the conflict.”

The strike is expected to disrupt daily life across Spain, with potential disruptions to public transportation, schools, businesses, and government services. Marches and rallies are planned in major cities, including Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, and Seville. Security measures are being increased to ensure public safety and prevent any potential clashes.

While the Spanish government has expressed its concern over the situation in Gaza and called for a ceasefire, it has not officially endorsed the strike. Some political parties have voiced support for the action, while others have criticized it as being overly simplistic and potentially damaging to the Spanish economy.

The general strike highlights the deep divisions within Spanish society regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. It also underscores the growing international pressure on Israel to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and engage in meaningful peace negotiations with the Palestinian Authority.

The situation in Gaza remains a complex and highly sensitive issue, with both Israelis and Palestinians suffering significant losses. A lasting solution will require a commitment from all parties to dialogue, compromise, and respect for international law. The Spanish general strike serves as a reminder that the world is watching and demanding an end to the cycle of violence.
