Algeria: Minister Meets Unions to Boost Press Freedom & Standards

Algerian Minister of Communication, Zouhir Bouamama, convened a meeting with leading officials and representatives from journalists’ unions and associations on Monday, October 13, 2025. The meeting, held at the Ministry headquarters, focused on addressing key concerns and proposals from media professionals and strengthening the sector’s legal framework.

The Minister emphasized the importance of completing the legislative system governing the communication sector, particularly the enactment of crucial legal texts, including the fundamental law for journalists. This law, he stated, would pave the way for resolving numerous outstanding issues and comprehensively regulating the industry. The proposed law aims to address issues such as job security, ethical standards, and the overall operational framework for journalists in Algeria.

Bouamama also highlighted the necessity of establishing regulatory bodies to ensure stricter organization of the media landscape and to oversee the implementation of legal rules governing journalistic practices. These regulatory bodies would be responsible for monitoring media content, enforcing ethical guidelines, and ensuring compliance with existing laws related to freedom of the press and responsible journalism.

During the meeting, the Minister urged all leaders and representatives of national unions and associations in the sector to organize themselves according to the President’s directives and to foster solidarity among unions, ultimately serving the common interests of journalists. He emphasized the need for a unified voice to advocate for the rights and welfare of journalists and to promote a more professional and ethical media environment.

Union representatives expressed their appreciation for the Ministry’s open and consultative approach with social partners, affirming their readiness to actively contribute to all initiatives aimed at advancing the sector and improving its professional and institutional performance. They acknowledged the importance of ongoing dialogue and collaboration between the government and media stakeholders to address the challenges facing the industry.

Suleiman Abdoush, President of the National Organization of Algerian Journalists, emphasized the importance of providing a professional environment that preserves the dignity of journalists and ensures their social stability and legal protection. He reiterated the organization’s commitment to continuing to work to improve the conditions of journalists and to build constructive cooperation with the Ministry of Communication and all partners for a free, professional, and responsible media that serves the public interest and enhances public trust in the media.

The discussions underscore the Algerian government’s commitment to fostering a vibrant and responsible media landscape. Key takeaways from the meeting included the importance of legal reforms, the establishment of regulatory bodies, and the promotion of solidarity among journalists’ unions. The focus remains on creating a supportive environment where journalists can operate freely and ethically, contributing to a more informed and engaged citizenry. The Algerian government aims to create a robust media environment that protects journalistic freedom while promoting responsible reporting and ethical standards, ultimately strengthening public trust and contributing to a more informed society.
