Rude to AI? ChatGPT May Give Better Answers, Study Finds

A surprising new study suggests that being impolite to AI chatbots like ChatGPT might actually yield more accurate results. Researchers at Pennsylvania State University discovered that using a rude or aggressive tone when posing questions to the AI model GPT-4o could lead to improved answer accuracy compared to using polite or neutral language. This challenges previous assumptions about AI interaction and raises interesting questions about how these models process and respond to different communication styles.

The study, highlighted by Digital Trends, involved presenting GPT-4o with 50 multiple-choice questions, each phrased in 250 different ways ranging from extremely polite to extremely rude, with neutral phrasing in between. The results were unexpected: when asked questions politely, ChatGPT answered correctly 80.8% of the time. However, when the same questions were presented with a rude or aggressive tone, the accuracy jumped to 84.8%. Neutral questions fell somewhere in the middle, performing better than polite queries but not as well as the rude ones.

This finding contradicts earlier research suggesting that rudeness leads to lower-quality responses and can introduce biases or inaccuracies in AI chatbot replies. The researchers behind the current study acknowledge that their experiment was limited to a specific type of task – multiple-choice questions – and that the results might not be generalizable to all types of interactions or to other AI chatbots such as Google’s Gemini, Anthropic’s Claude, or Meta AI. The implication is that the way an AI chatbot is designed can significantly change the results. This could mean that different AI models have different optimal communication styles for the user.

Furthermore, the researchers emphasized the complexity of politeness and rudeness, noting that the specific wording and vocabulary used, rather than just the overall tone, could influence the quality of the responses. It is worth noting that the study used the GPT-4o model. Free users currently access GPT models through ChatGPT, which is now running on GPT-5. This opens the door for further research to understand how user style affects AI model performance in the future, and the results could be completely different for different models.

This research highlights the evolving nature of AI and the ongoing need to understand how these systems respond to human input. It suggests that the relationship between humans and AI is more nuanced than previously thought and that further investigation is needed to optimize communication strategies for different AI models. While being rude to AI might seem counterintuitive, this study suggests that it could, in certain circumstances, lead to more accurate and helpful responses. Further research is needed to see how this translates across other AI models and different styles of questions. The results of this study may lead to some interesting applications for AI chatbots and their users.
