The Foreign Minister of Western Sahara, Mohamed Salem Ould Salek, has affirmed that the proposal put forth by the Polisario Front is comprehensive and democratic, guided by viable options for decolonization and the exercise of the right to self-determination. This statement underscores the ongoing quest for a resolution to the decades-long conflict in the region.
Speaking at a press conference held at the Sahrawi embassy in Algiers, Minister Salek elaborated on the nature of the Sahrawi proposal. He emphasized that it encompasses various possibilities within the framework of decolonization, including independence, integration with Morocco, or other options outlined in relevant United Nations General Assembly resolutions, specifically Resolution 1541 (1960) and Resolution 2625 (1970).
“The Polisario Front advocates for national independence, but we will respect the will of the Sahrawi people and their free choice, whatever it may be, and we will not allow any option to be imposed upon them,” Minister Salek stated, highlighting the commitment to a fair and democratic process. This commitment to respecting the Sahrawi people’s choice is a cornerstone of their approach to finding a lasting solution.
The Foreign Minister further emphasized the importance of regional integration, stating that the Sahrawi proposal stems from a desire, “as an African and Maghreb people, for the urgent importance and necessity of accelerating Maghreb integration and integration in the north of the African continent, in line with the aspirations of the peoples of the region and the vision of the African Union.” This highlights the belief that a resolution to the Western Sahara conflict is crucial for broader regional stability and cooperation.
Minister Salek also addressed the protracted nature of the conflict, acknowledging that after fifty years of war and conflict on various fronts, the Sahrawi side believes that the time has come to turn the page on the past with its pain and wounds, and to move towards a promising future filled with opportunities for prosperity and dignity for new generations. This forward-looking perspective seeks to build a future based on mutual respect and shared benefits.
He further asserted that the Sahrawi proposal is based on the firm conviction that true peace does not come through intrigue, maneuvering, or imposed solutions, but is built through responsible dialogue and mutual respect based on the exchange of benefits and facing common challenges with reason, wisdom, and honesty. The focus on dialogue and mutual respect is aimed at fostering a sustainable and equitable resolution.
The core issues remain the self-determination of the Sahrawi people and the decolonization of Western Sahara. The Polisario Front’s proposal offers a framework for negotiations, emphasizing the importance of respecting the will of the Sahrawi people in choosing their future. The international community continues to monitor the situation, urging both parties to engage in constructive dialogue to achieve a just and lasting solution to this long-standing conflict. The keywords self-determination, Western Sahara, Polisario Front, and decolonization are central to understanding the ongoing situation.
