Addis Ababa – The African Union Commission will convene the fifth session of the Specialized Technical Committee on Migration, Refugees, and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) from November 10th to 14th in Addis Ababa. This crucial meeting aims to address pressing issues related to migration and humanitarian action across the continent.
The committee will focus on updating continental frameworks and policies concerning migration, forced displacement, and related humanitarian challenges. Discussions will center on aligning these policies with the African Union’s Agenda 2063, a strategic framework for the socio-economic transformation of the continent over the next several decades.
Key areas of focus will include:
- Reviewing existing legal and policy instruments related to migration and asylum.
- Developing strategies to address the root causes of forced displacement, such as conflict, poverty, and climate change.
- Enhancing cooperation among member states in managing migration flows and protecting the rights of refugees and IDPs.
- Promoting durable solutions for refugees and IDPs, including voluntary repatriation, local integration, and resettlement.
- Strengthening the capacity of national authorities to manage migration and provide assistance to vulnerable populations.
The meeting is expected to bring together experts from across the African continent, as well as representatives from international organizations and civil society. The outcomes of the session will inform the AU’s future work on migration and humanitarian issues, contributing to a more coordinated and effective response to these challenges.
The African Union recognizes the complex nature of migration and displacement, and is committed to working with its member states and partners to address these challenges in a comprehensive and sustainable manner. This week’s meeting underscores the AU’s dedication to finding solutions that promote the well-being of all Africans, including those who are forced to leave their homes.
