Former Portuguese international Rui Costa has been re-elected as president of Benfica, securing his position at the helm of the club until 2029. Costa’s victory over opponent Noronha Lopes in the election ensures his second term leading the Lisbon-based giants.
Costa initially assumed the presidency in 2021. During his first term, he is credited with restoring balance and stability to one of Portugal’s most prominent football clubs.
A legendary figure for Benfica, Rui Costa rose through the club’s youth ranks and played for the first team for several seasons. His successful professional career included seven seasons with Fiorentina and five with AC Milan before returning to Benfica to conclude his playing career.
The 53-year-old Costa earned 94 caps for the Portuguese national team. Renowned for his exceptional skills and elegant playing style, he established himself as one of the finest playmakers of his generation. His leadership is now focused on continuing Benfica’s success both on and off the pitch.
