Vietnam Shuts Down Airports as Typhoon Kalmaegi Approaches

HANOI – Vietnam has closed six airports as Typhoon Kalmaegi barrels towards the central regions of the country. The closures, enacted on Thursday, are expected to disrupt hundreds of flights.

According to a statement released by the Vietnamese National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, the typhoon is anticipated to make landfall along the coastline from Quang Ngai to Dak Lak in the early hours of Friday morning.

The agency warned of potentially severe weather conditions accompanying the typhoon. These include heavy rainfall across several regions, raising the risk of flash floods in rivers and small streams. There is also an elevated threat of landslides on slopes and flooding in low-lying and urban areas.

Authorities are urging residents in the affected areas to take necessary precautions and follow official guidance to ensure their safety. The extent of the disruption to air travel remains to be seen, but airlines are advising passengers to check the status of their flights.

The airport closures are a proactive measure intended to safeguard both passengers and airport staff from the anticipated impact of Typhoon Kalmaegi. Further updates will be provided as the situation develops.
