DZWatch Exclusive: Algeria is undergoing a rapid digital transformation under President Tebboune, signaling a strategic shift to reshape the nation’s governance and economy. Experts highlight significant advancements in digital development indicators, suggesting a move beyond basic infrastructure upgrades.
This transformation aims to establish effective e-governance, leveraging digitization to combat bureaucratic inefficiencies, curb corruption, and strengthen citizen trust in state institutions. The ambitious plan seeks to modernize Algeria and improve its competitiveness on the global stage.
However, despite these advancements, challenges remain in achieving full digital maturity. While optimistic about ongoing government initiatives, specialists note a lag in adopting digital solutions across key sectors. This is particularly evident in the limited adoption of electronic payment systems, with only a small fraction of merchants utilizing them. This slow adoption rate underscores the need to cultivate a stronger culture of electronic transactions within the Algerian economy.
Meryem Benmouloud, the High Commissioner for Digitalization, emphasized that ‘Dzaïr Services’ represents a crucial step towards a unified digital Algeria. The platform aims to streamline government services and enhance accessibility for citizens.
Experts speaking to DZWatch acknowledge that digitization under President Tebboune has become a strategic imperative for re-engineering the Algerian state, a first since independence. The potential benefits of widespread digitization across various sectors are immense, promising greater efficiency, transparency, and economic growth. The focus now is on overcoming existing hurdles and accelerating the pace of digital adoption to realize the full potential of this transformation.
Mohamed Louail, Director of Digital Governance at the High Commission for Digitalization, recently highlighted the importance of continued investment and strategic planning to ensure the success of Algeria’s digital journey.
