French Senator: Algeria Used as Bogeyman for Political Gain

Paris, France – A French senator has strongly criticized political rhetoric that fuels tensions between Algeria and France, accusing certain factions of using Algeria as a convenient ‘bogeyman’ for their own political purposes. Senator Akli Mellouli, of Algerian descent and Vice-President of the French-Algerian Friendship Group in the Senate, made the remarks during an interview.

Mellouli, a member of the Green party, specifically targeted the French parliament’s recent vote on a resolution calling for the repeal of the 1968 agreement governing Algerian immigration to France. He argued that this move “reproduces the old hate speech that feeds on colonial history.” According to Mellouli, those who promote division often need a constant enemy, and Algeria conveniently fits that role.

“The National Rally party was founded in 1963 on the ruins of the Algerian war and continues to live on the illusion of revenge,” Mellouli stated, referencing the legacy of the Secret Armed Organisation (OAS). He added that the party perpetuates a narrative rooted in historical grievances.

The senator also expressed concern about what he described as a resurgence of ‘neo-colonial tendencies’ within the French political landscape. He emphasized that the 1968 agreement does not grant Algerians any special privileges, contrary to popular claims. He argued that Algerians already face administrative hurdles in France, putting them at a disadvantage compared to others.

Mellouli warned of potential repercussions should the current escalation continue. “If this escalation persists, Algeria is also capable of reviewing or canceling other agreements with France, whether those related to energy or diplomatic properties,” he cautioned.

In a direct message to French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez, Senator Mellouli called for a more realistic and measured approach to addressing sensitive issues between the two nations.
