Algeria Launches Tenders for Wheat and Barley Imports

Algiers, November 10, 2025 – Algeria has initiated two new international tenders for the purchase of 50,000 tonnes of feed barley and 50,000 tonnes of milling wheat. The move, orchestrated by the Algerian Interprofessional Cereals Office (OAIC), aims to bolster national reserves and ensure a stable supply of essential commodities during the upcoming winter months and the start of the new year.

This action underscores Algeria’s commitment to strengthening its grain reserves amidst potential disruptions in global supply chains and fluctuations in international prices.

According to European traders, the specifications of the tenders, limiting shipments to only two ports, suggest a relatively modest volume compared to previous calls. The deadline for submitting bids is set for Tuesday, November 11, with offers remaining valid until Wednesday, November 12.

The technical conditions stipulate that barley shipments from various origins are to be delivered in two windows: December 1-15 and December 16-31, followed by bi-monthly deliveries throughout January and February 2026.

For milling wheat, supplies are expected from traditional sources, primarily Europe, with similar delivery schedules as the barley. However, the tender allows for shipments from South America or Australia to be expedited by one month to avoid any delays in reaching Algerian ports.

The OAIC has specified that unloading operations will be conducted exclusively at the ports of Mostaganem and/or Ténès. This decision is poised to enhance the role of western Algerian ports in import activities and promote a more balanced distribution of supplies across the country.

Market data indicates that Algeria has recently increased its imports from the Black Sea region, particularly from Russia and Romania, capitalizing on competitive prices and lower transportation costs. The OAIC continues to pursue a policy of diversifying partners and sources to guarantee stable supplies and enhance food security in the face of global challenges. DZWatch will continue to monitor these developments.
