Algeria Solidifies Position in European Gas Market

ALGIERS – Algeria continues to be a vital supplier of natural gas to the European Union, according to recent international reports. Data indicates that Algerian gas exports reached approximately 29 billion cubic meters in the first three quarters of this year.

While this represents a slight decrease compared to the same period last year, Algeria has maintained its crucial role in meeting European energy demands through both pipelines and liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments. The data is based on information from the European think tank Bruegel, utilizing Bloomberg and GIE data.

Italy remains Algeria’s primary customer for pipeline gas. During the first eight months of 2025, Italy received approximately 14.5 billion cubic meters via the Transmed pipeline, representing about 35.5% of its market share, according to the Italian Ministry of Environment and Energy Security.

The minor decrease in Algerian exports is attributed to an overall decline in European gas demand, coupled with maintenance work conducted on the country’s largest gas liquefaction unit earlier this year. Despite increased competition within the European market, particularly from rising U.S. LNG imports, Algeria has successfully maintained its strategic position. Other nations have experienced a reduction in their market share.

European analysts predict a typical increase in Algerian gas flows during the final quarter of each year, averaging approximately 11 billion cubic meters over the past three years. This trend has contributed to stabilizing exports at 41.3 billion cubic meters in 2024 and 43 billion in 2023.

Looking ahead, European sources anticipate a new phase of growth in Algerian gas exports in 2026, with Germany expected to join the list of customers with an estimated annual intake of 4 billion cubic meters. This development is poised to further strengthen Algeria’s presence in one of the world’s largest energy markets. Algeria is actively investing in its infrastructure and pursuing a strategic vision to solidify its role as a key energy provider to Europe. DZWatch will continue to monitor these developments.
