The Minister of Environment and Quality of Life, Kawthar Krikou, today presided over the establishment of the National Committee for the Colonial Environmental Memory Project. The inauguration ceremony highlighted the importance of preserving and documenting the environmental legacy of the colonial era.
During the ceremony, Minister Krikou emphasized that environmental memory constitutes an integral part of the national memory. She stressed the vital role of documenting the environmental impacts caused by colonialism to safeguard the environmental and historical awareness of future generations. This initiative aims to ensure that the lessons learned from the past inform present and future environmental policies.
“The preservation of our environmental memory is a national duty,” stated Minister Krikou. “It is imperative that we understand the long-term consequences of past actions to prevent similar damage and promote sustainable practices.”
In conjunction with the committee’s establishment, the Minister also launched a scientific and documentary guide dedicated to identifying and documenting the environmental damages resulting from colonial practices in Algeria. This guide will serve as a crucial resource for researchers, policymakers, and the public, providing detailed information and analysis of the lasting environmental scars left by colonialism.
The National Committee will be responsible for overseeing research, documentation, and public awareness campaigns related to the environmental impacts of colonialism. Its work will contribute to a deeper understanding of Algeria’s environmental history and inform efforts to address ongoing environmental challenges. The committee’s mandate includes collaborating with academic institutions, environmental organizations, and local communities to ensure a comprehensive and inclusive approach to preserving the nation’s environmental memory.
This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to acknowledging the past and building a more sustainable future for Algeria.
