Algiers, November 10, 2025 – The National Rail Transport Company (SNTF) has announced plans to significantly increase the volume of fuel transported by rail across Algeria. The directive follows a high-level meeting aimed at ensuring a consistent and secure supply of fuel to various regions of the country.
The meeting, chaired by the Director-General of SNTF, Adj Aouni, included discussions with Waghnouni Faisal, CEO of the energy transport subsidiary, a joint venture between SNTF and Naftal. The primary focus was on optimizing the railway network for the transportation of fuel, a vital and strategic resource.
The Director-General received detailed briefings on the current fuel transport plan, highlighting the provinces currently supplied via the national railway network. Current figures indicate that approximately 1,800,000 tons of fuel are transported annually by rail, underscoring the company’s critical role in maintaining national fuel supplies.
To improve efficiency, the Director-General issued directives to closely monitor fuel train movements, ensuring smoother transport and supply operations. He specifically called for strengthening fuel transport to the High Plateaus and the southern regions of Algeria, aiming to increase transported volumes to meet rising national demand.
Furthermore, instructions were given to explore the feasibility of resuming Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) and fuel transport from Sidi Bel Abbes towards the southwest, particularly along the Bechar-Tindouf-Gara Djebilet axis. This initiative aims to enhance fuel accessibility in these remote areas.
In a move to bolster transport capacity, the Director-General ordered the expedited rehabilitation of 40 tank wagons, each with a capacity of 65 cubic meters. This refurbishment is expected to increase overall fuel transport capacity by approximately 10%, significantly enhancing the railway’s contribution to national fuel distribution.
