Mali on the Brink: Experts Analyze Crisis, Offer Solutions

Bamako Faces Unprecedented Security Crisis as State Authority Erodes

Mali is currently facing an unprecedented security crisis that threatens the collapse of state institutions and the existing political order. The escalating influence of armed groups, coupled with a crippling blockade on the capital Bamako, has triggered a severe fuel shortage, near-total paralysis of trade and transportation, and a surge in prices exceeding 200%.

Observers believe that the military coup led by Assimi Goïta marked a dangerous turning point for Mali, effectively dismantling the 2015 Algiers Agreement for Peace and Reconciliation. This agreement was considered the cornerstone for building lasting peace and integrating northern components, particularly the Tuareg, into the state’s political and military institutions.

Armed Groups Tighten Grip on Bamako, Control Vital Resources

Jama’at Nasr al-Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM), affiliated with al-Qaeda, has imposed an economic blockade on Bamako for weeks by targeting supply convoys from Senegal and Côte d’Ivoire. This has resulted in supply disruptions and paralysis of public transportation. The group has also claimed responsibility for kidnapping three Egyptians, demanding a ransom of five million dollars, a move that underscores the declining security authority of the state and the growing influence of jihadist organizations.

Reports indicate that the group now controls approximately 80% of gold production in the Kayes region, using the revenue to finance its military and logistical operations. This significantly weakens the junta government’s ability to control its natural resources.

International Warnings and Fears of State Collapse Mount

Amidst this deteriorating security situation, a series of warnings have been issued from Western capitals urging their citizens to evacuate Mali. France, the United States, Germany, Italy, and Australia have all called on their citizens to leave immediately, warning of worsening security conditions, even within Bamako.

The situation remains highly volatile, with experts concerned about the potential for further destabilization and a complete collapse of the Malian state. The international community is closely monitoring the situation, but concrete solutions remain elusive.
