Indonesia Seeks to Boost Investment Presence in Algeria

Algeria is exploring enhanced collaboration with Indonesia, focusing on expanding and diversifying Indonesian investment within the Algerian energy and mining sectors. This initiative was highlighted during a meeting held on Monday between the Minister of State, Minister of Hydrocarbons and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, and the Indonesian Ambassador to Algeria, Chalief Akbar Tjandraningrat.

The discussions, which also included the Secretary of State to the Minister of Hydrocarbons and Mines, Karima Bakir Tafer, and the General Manager of Pertamina Algeria, centered on strategies to deepen Algerian-Indonesian cooperation in hydrocarbons and mining. Both parties exchanged views on potential collaborations between their respective companies, fueled by increasing interest from Indonesian entities like Pertamina and Pupuk in investing in Algeria.

Key areas of focus included strengthening ties between Sonatrach and Pertamina in oil and gas production and crude oil marketing. Furthermore, Pupuk Indonesia, a leading chemical and fertilizer company, presented an investment plan expressing interest in developing joint projects in Algeria’s phosphate and gas sectors. These projects aim to foster local manufacturing and enhance value-added processes.

The discussions also addressed broader cooperation in the mining sector, particularly in the exploitation, processing, and marketing of phosphates, as well as the exploration and utilization of mineral resources such as lithium. Emphasis was placed on fostering dialogue and collaboration regarding supply chains and the sustainable manufacturing of critical raw materials and rare earth minerals. The exchange of experiences and expertise in hydrocarbons and mining was also a key topic.

Minister Arkab emphasized Algeria’s commitment to building balanced and mutually beneficial strategic partnerships with friendly nations, prioritizing technology transfer and the valorization of national resources. He also underscored the importance of learning from successful international experiences, such as Indonesia’s advancements in developing processing industries related to mining and hydrocarbons.

Ambassador Tjandraningrat conveyed Indonesia’s appreciation for the cooperation opportunities available in Algeria, affirming Indonesia’s ambition to strengthen its investment presence in Africa through strategic partnerships.
