The issue of Hamas fighters trapped in tunnels beneath Rafah has emerged as a significant obstacle to the ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip. For over three weeks, these fighters have been stranded in an area under Israeli control, creating a tense situation that mediators are urgently trying to resolve.
Recent reports suggest that negotiations are underway between the United States and Turkey to find a solution for these stranded combatants. According to sources, the discussions involve the potential release of the Hamas fighters and their subsequent relocation to Turkey, with a possible distribution to other countries thereafter. A senior official indicated that Israel might consider this option under pressure from the U.S.
Under the initial phase of the internationally-brokered ceasefire agreement reached last month, the entire city of Rafah fell behind what is known as the ‘Yellow Line,’ an area under the control of the Israeli military. However, active resistance tunnels remain beneath this area, reportedly housing an estimated 150 to 200 fighters, according to Israeli assessments.
The issue of these trapped fighters came to the forefront following security incidents last month that resulted in the deaths of Israeli soldiers. The Israeli military responded with extensive strikes across the Gaza Strip, resulting in numerous Palestinian casualties. In the aftermath, Israeli officials insisted that the Hamas fighters faced a choice between surrender and death, which negatively impacted the handover of deceased Israeli hostages and led to delays on multiple occasions.
Hamas has informed mediators that while they are willing to remove the fighters, surrender is not an option. They have also warned against any attempts by Israeli forces to storm the fighters’ positions. Meanwhile, reports indicate that the US is attempting to de-escalate the situation, with proposals suggesting allowing the fighters in Rafah to move to Hamas-controlled areas within the Gaza Strip. The situation remains delicate, with the fate of the ceasefire hanging in the balance. Ongoing diplomatic efforts are crucial to preventing further escalation and ensuring the stability of the region.
