Annaba Port is making significant strides towards becoming a ‘green port’ through the implementation of innovative environmental technologies. This initiative aligns with international standards and reflects a new vision for the maritime transport sector in Algeria.
The Port Authority of Annaba has launched an ambitious project focused on environmental sustainability. This move follows instructions from the Minister of Interior, Local Authorities, and Transport, emphasizing the need for close monitoring of port activities and their development in accordance with global benchmarks.
A key component of this transformation is a partnership with the research center subsidiary, PS ENV, to establish a pioneering ‘WTNPs Station’. This station represents a first-of-its-kind initiative in Algeria, employing environmentally friendly nanotechnology and solar energy.
The WTNPs Station will utilize green nanoparticles and solar power to treat, filter, and recycle water from ship holds and tugboats. This treated water can then be reused within the port facilities, leading to significant improvements in water resource management and overall environmental performance.
The project aims to position Annaba Port as the first ‘green port’ in Algeria, adhering to the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL). This convention sets strict standards for protecting oceans and reducing marine pollution.
This initiative is part of a broader national strategy to modernize Algerian ports, transforming them into sustainable spaces that prioritize environmental protection and leverage the latest technologies in renewable energy and waste management. The project underscores Algeria’s commitment to sustainable development within its maritime sector.
