UK Parliamentarians Reaffirm Support for Sahrawi Self-Determination

British parliamentarians have reiterated their unwavering support for the Sahrawi people’s right to freedom and self-determination. This renewed commitment was voiced during a political evening held at the UK Parliament.

The event, organized by a coalition of parliamentarians, solidarity associations, and representatives from the Polisario Front, brought together political figures, diplomats, academics, artists, and members of the Sahrawi diaspora residing in the UK. The gathering served as a platform to discuss the latest developments surrounding the Western Sahara issue.

Key speakers included Ben Lake, former Chair of the Parliamentary Committee for Solidarity with the Sahrawi People, Omar Mansour, representative of the Sahrawi Ambassador for Europe and European Institutions, Sidi Breika, Polisario Front representative in Ireland, and Hamdi Youssef, Deputy Representative of the Polisario Front in the United Kingdom.

Discussions centered on recent developments, including the latest UN Security Council resolution and the British government’s stance on the decolonization process in Western Sahara, recognized as Africa’s last colony. The parliamentarians present reaffirmed their steadfast support for the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination, emphasizing the need for continued political and humanitarian efforts to achieve a just and lasting solution based on international law.

Mark Lutchford, Chair of the Western Sahara Campaign, concluded the evening by underscoring the solidarity movement’s continued support for the Sahrawi people and their struggle for a just cause. Furthermore, the formation of the British Parliamentary Group for Solidarity with the Sahrawi People was announced. This initiative aims to strengthen the political presence of the Sahrawi cause within the British Parliament and advocate for it within political and media circles, particularly within the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office.

In related events supporting the Sahrawi people, labor unions and organizations in London affirmed that companies complicit in the exploitation of Western Sahara’s resources by Morocco are encouraging Moroccan settlement in the region at the expense of the Sahrawi people. A delegation from the Polisario Front also presented an overview of recent developments concerning the Sahrawi issue.
