President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of the Federal Republic of Somalia concluded a three-day official visit to Algeria on Thursday, leading a high-level delegation. The visit culminated in the signing of several agreements aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation across various sectors.
Key highlights of the visit included the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Algerian Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research and the Somali Ministry of Education, Culture, and Higher Education. This agreement focuses on collaboration in the field of higher education, accompanied by an executive program spanning the years 2026-2029.
Furthermore, both governments inked agreements in the vital sectors of agriculture, fisheries, and animal health. A significant agreement was also reached concerning cooperation in the oil, gas, and mining industries.
In a move to facilitate diplomatic exchanges, an agreement was signed to waive visa requirements for holders of diplomatic passports from both countries.
During a joint press conference, the Algerian President emphasized that President Mohamud’s visit reflected the “shared desire to strengthen cooperation and the commitment to building bridges of collaboration and exchanging views on issues of mutual interest.” He highlighted the numerous opportunities for collaboration in sectors such as energy, agriculture, fisheries, pharmaceutical industries, and higher education. He also announced that Algeria would welcome 110 Somali students for training during the 2026-2027 academic year.
The Algerian President expressed his satisfaction with the discussions held with his Somali counterpart, underscoring the “agreement between the two countries to support the right of the Palestinian people to establish an independent state with Jerusalem as its capital.”
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud lauded Algeria’s role in promoting peace, justice, and African solidarity. He described his talks with the Algerian President as being conducted in “a spirit of brotherhood and mutual understanding, with a shared determination to strengthen the historical ties that bind the two peoples.” He affirmed the commitment of both nations to building a “partnership based on mutual respect.”
“We will always remember Algeria’s honorable stances alongside Somalia during the most difficult times,” President Mohamud stated, acknowledging Algeria’s unwavering support for Somalia.
