Iranian Forces Seize Oil Tanker Near Strait of Hormuz

TEHRAN – Iranian forces intercepted and seized an oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz earlier today, diverting its course into Iranian territorial waters, DZWatch has learned. This marks a significant escalation in maritime tensions in the strategically vital waterway.

According to a source, the vessel, identified as the Talara, was sailing under the flag of the Marshall Islands and en route from Ajman in the United Arab Emirates to Singapore when it was confronted by Iranian naval vessels. The source indicated that Iranian personnel boarded the tanker and compelled it to alter its course.

The incident was reportedly observed by a US drone operating in the area. Maritime security firm Ambrey stated that the operation involved three small boats approaching and subsequently controlling the tanker.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) confirmed the incident, suggesting that “state activity” was likely responsible for forcing the ship into Iranian waters. The vessel’s management company, Columbia Shipmanagement, based in Cyprus, reported a loss of contact with the tanker, which was carrying high-sulfur fuel oil. The company emphasized that it had alerted relevant authorities and that the safety of the crew was its “top priority.”

While Iranian authorities have not officially commented on the seizure, the incident occurs amidst heightened regional tensions. DZWatch sources indicate that this action may be linked to previous warnings from Tehran regarding potential retaliation for earlier military confrontations. The situation remains fluid, and further updates will be provided as they become available.
